phrase that inspires you: b • persistent
“Persistent: continuing firmly in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.” In life so many people try new things only to walk away because it’s difficult or a lot of work. Embrace difficulty like it’s your best friend. Everybody who becomes great at something has to struggle a little bit before they actually become great. Being persistent not only creates a good work ethic, but also motivates others to continue to persevere even when they feel like quitting. Don’t quit when it gets hard, but b.persistent until you can say with a smile on your face that you conquered whatever was holding you back.
what inspired you to start dancing?
When I was 3 years old, my mom put me in a dance class so I would have something to do during my sister's tumbling lessons. After a couple years of some classes, I knew I wanted to compete on stage and be just like the older girls on the dance company.
what keeps you motivated?
I am highly self motivated, so I might walk into the studio with a goal in mind for myself and not leave till I accomplish it. Whether it's cleaning a certain section of a self choreographed routine or improvising in different time signatures, perfectionism is a pretty great motivator.
My biggest accomplishments would be representing Team USA in the World Tap Championships in Riesa, Germany in 2017 through the American Tap Company and winning the title of adult gold medalist at the American Tap Championships in San Diego, California in 2018. I love traveling to different tap festivals and competing in cutting contests as well.
trained in which dance genres?
I was trained competitively in jazz, ballet, tumbling, contemporary, and tap till age 15 when I decided to solely pursue tap dance, which became my area of expertise.
I am a member of the Circle City Tap Company and the Loose Screws Tap Company.
why do you want to teach dance?
I enjoy sharing my knowledge and love of tap with younger students so I can pass on tap's rich history and all the experiences/opportunities it has brought me.
why do you want to teach at studio b?
Studio b is seriously the place to b! The whole staff is amazing to work with and those values are passed along to the students, resulting in amazing kids who genuinely love to dance.
any other fun facts you'd like to share?
I used to travel 50 minutes to and from Indy to go to dance practice, I love exploring new cities and coffee shops, and my current project is expanding and building on Purdue's tap club, "Footnotes: PTC."
